Dilwale ~ An attack on the hearts (read mind) of fans

Release date - 18th December 2015

One Word which describes the film - Mediocre

Best Dialogue - 'Hum shareef kya hue ... poori duniya hi badmash ban gayi.'

Genre - Romance/ Action/ Comedy

Producer - Gauri KhanRohit Shetty

Story - Yunus Sajawal

Direction - Rohit Shetty

Budget- 100 Crores Approximately

First of all I want to say that I am not a fan of Rohit Shetty kind of comedy. I loved Singham (2011) but as it was a remake of the 2010 Tamil blockbuster Singam not much credit can be given to Rohit Shetty for it.
When you have the money and talented actors like Shah Rukh KhanKajolVarun DhawanVinod KhannaJohnny LeverSanjay Mishra and Boman Irani it's really disappointing to see a film which reminds you of several other films you have already seen in the past.

The film starts with a very colorful set where the houses, streets, cafes have all the colors of rainbow which instantly remind you of Shetty's All The Best: Fun Begins (2009). Like Ajay Devgan here also our lead actors are car mechanics who modify cars.
For the next 40 minutes the film just keeps going on and on without any proper story-line. We wonder why Varun Dhawan who gave an award winning performance earlier this year in Badlapur agreed to play a character where he has to talk in a kiddish voice and say insignificant dialogues like, 'Mai apki maang mai sindoor bharna chahta hoon' (this to SRK).
When Kajol makes her entry the film catches some speed and we get engrossed in her style and beauty. Quite a makeover I must say as no where she looked like a mother of two kids. Her chemistry with Shahrukh is perfect.
Shahrukh Khan sports two looks in the film. In his clean shaven look he reminds us of Raj from DDLJ but here he is called 'Kali'. In his bearded look when he looks like a gangster (the same look he has kept for his upcoming film Raees) the director calls him Raj. Guess the director got confused between the looks and names.

Jhonny Lever is back as Mani Bhai and brings the same 1990's kind of comedy.

Mani Bhai - Ye tune do ghadi kyun nikaali?
Veer: Main ye dono ghadi chor ke haathon me pehna dunga, is se wo do ghadi ka mehmaan ho jayega.

There is a 5 minute date scene in the film which Rohit Shetty has straightaway copied from the 2 minutes date from Hollywood series How I  met your mother.
The film has the usual cars colliding and flying in air. The only difference is that Scorpios have been replaced by BMWs and instead of small time gangsters we have mafias who deal in gold and use high end rifles.
Two songs of the film 'Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua and 'Janam Janam' sung by Arijit Singh are quite melodious. 'Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua' shot in Iceland reminds us of 'Suraj Hua Maddham' from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.
In a line the film is made to cash on the chemistry of Shahrukh and Kajol and their fans will watch it.

Bajirao Mastani ~ A cinematic treat for the Romantics

Release date- 18th December 2015

One Word which describes the film -
Passionate

Best Dialogue -

'Tujhe yaad kar liya aayat ki tarah, ab tera zikra hoga ibaadat ki tarah.'

Genre - Period Romance/ Drama

Music - Sanchit Balhara, Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Story - Based on Marathi novel Rau by N.S. Inamdar

Direction -Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Budget- 100 Crores plus

We all know that in 2003 Sanjay Leela Bhansali  wanted to cast Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai for the eponymous roles, but could not cast them together after their highly publicised break-up. After 12 years we are presented with his dream project and the film is surely worth the long wait.
As soon as the film starts we are struck by the grand and magnificent sets which take us to an era about which we have read in history books.
The film tells about the life of a commander who is loved and trusted by his army. He is brave and doesn't accept the norms of the society.
Ranveer Singh is the perfect choice for the role of Bajirao. Whether he is telling his army men ,'Cheeteh Ki Chaal, Baaz Ki Nazar Aur Baaji Rao Ki Talvar Par Sandeh Nahi Karte, Kabhi Bhi Maat De Sakti Hai' or saying romantic dialogues like Humare dil ek saath dhadakte hai Mastani', he says them with equal ease. We are so engrossed with his charm, exuberance and energy that we can feel his confusion, his love, his pain and his heart break.

Deepika Padukone has excelled as Mastani and looks like a real princess who believes in following her heart. All her costumes are so beautiful that we can't take our eyes off her. The moment she  makes her entry we can feel the chemistry between her and her real life boyfriend Ranveer Singh. If Katrina Kaif felt insecure after watching Deepika's chemistry with Ranbeer Kapoor in Tamasha, she should now watch Bajirao Mastani to see the real thing. She gets to say powerful dialogues in the film which will make you whistle and clap
Ishq, Jo Tufani Duniya Se Bagawat Karjaye Woh Ishq,
Bhare Darbar Mein Jo Duniya Se Lad Jaae Woh Ishq,
Jo Mehboob Ko Dekhe Toh Khuda Ko Bhul Jaae Woh Ishq.

Priyanka Chopra is touching new heights in her career these days so the only reason she must have accepted to do a supporting role can be that she was too much touched by Bhansali's dream project and wanted to be part of this epic saga. Her role is powerful but such is the aura of Mastani that it shadows all other female characters of the film.

In a line Sanjay Leela Bhansali's love sagas may bring a tear to your eye from time to time, but without tears every so often even smiles lose their meaning.
Must be seen in theaters to experience the grandiose and magnificence of the film.

Tamasha ~ Why always the same review !

Release date- 27th Nov 2015

One Word which describes the film - Intense

Best Dialogue -

Deepika- Main Mona, Mona Darling.
Ranbir-  Toh main aap ko Mona kahun ya darling?

Genre - Romance/ Drama

Music -A. R. Rahman

Producer - Sajid Nadiadwala

Story & Direction -Imtiaz Ali

Budget- 50-60 Crores

First of all Tamasha is not a romantic film, at best it can be described as a series of events,  some happy, some sad, some painful and some which will touch your soul.

It's about a guy who thinks that as a child he was special and as he grew up he became a mediocre common man who just does things to please his family and society. Who is running a race without ever hoping to be in the top bracket as the race is not of his choice.

It's about a girl who falls in love with a guy and keeps that image of him for years only to find that with time the guy has completely changed into someone else. She has no ego in confessing her love and her heart refuses to believe what her mind tells her.

The characters are very real. You can identify with these young people who are carefree and want to live life to the hilt. They influence each other sometimes motivating them and other times hurting them unknowingly.

Imtiaz Ali may have been a little confused about how to present his 'different' story to the viewers but his decision of casting Ranbeer to play the role of ' Ved' was perfect.
Ranbeer Kapoor proves that he is a dynamic actor. How he transforms from a cool notorious guy to a well mannered guy to an angry young man to a hurt lover and finally to a confused guy who wants to know the end of his love story from someone else is truly amazing.

Deepika plays the role of a catalyst in helping the guy discover his story. She looks beautiful and shares a very believable on screen chemistry with Ranbeer. Guess Ranvir Singh and Katrina Kaif must have felt quite uneasy while seeing how comfortable the two look with each other.
The music of the film is good but because of the low buzz of the film the music also suffered.

The basic reason behind the masses rejecting the film can be that the director takes too long to come to the main idea. The starting is so slow that till 15 minutes you will wonder what's happening. Once he establishes a theme he again takes the viewers to a different journey again taking too many side paths. It's not that people are not ready to accept a different story, it's just that the first and foremost requirement of the viewers is to feel entertained. When the hero is on one of his soul-searching trips I saw many people letting out deep sighs or playing with their mobiles and some impatient ones even leaving the theatres.
The film has managed to recover it's production cost, against all odds.

In a line you may love the film or hate it but you will surely be impressed by the protagonist's changing body language in different scenes.

If you are a Ranbeer Kapoor fan you can see the film in theaters. Others can wait for it to be aired on TV.

Hate Story 3 ~ I hate you..like I love you..(Pun intended)

Release date -  4'th Dec 2015

One line which describes the film - Eroticism without thrill

Best Dialogue -'Rishte khoon se nahi dard se bante hai'

Genre - Erotic Thriller

Music - Amaal MallikMeet Bros
  • Baman

Story - Vikram BhattMadhuri Banerji

Direction -Vishal Pandya

Budget- 15-20 crores including P & A

Hate Story (2012) directed by Vivek Agnihotri was the most riveting and aesthetic saga of a woman's revenge against the man using unconventional means. According to Wikipedia before it's release the Central Board of Film Certification ordered the sex scenes in the movie to be reduced by 50% leaving the dialogues untouched. Because of it's novelty and thrill the film was a sleeper hit despite new actors and no promotions.
Hate Story 2 (2014) had a bigger budget and more promotions including an item number ' Pink Lips' by Sunny Leone. Though Sushant Singh and  Surveen Chawla were no match to the Gulshan Devaiya and Paoli Dam pair still the film was a much bigger hit.
There was great buzz for the third part as there were lot of promotions including the visit of both leading ladies in Salman Khan's show 'Big Boss 9'

The film started like normal Bollywood films, corporate scenes, peppy dance numbers, skyscrapers, bare chested heroes, scantily dressed heroines and some melodious songs. After an hour came the interval and till then there was no hate in the film only erotic songs every now and then. In fact till interval the audience could not even decide who was the good guy and who was the bad guy.
After interval too the same song and dance ritual continued with some lame attempt at story telling.

The story was so poor that anyone who watches films can conclude that Vikram Bhatt has straight away ripped the story from Sleeping with the Enemy(1991), Race (2008) , Corporate (2006), Indecent Proposal (1993) and other famous films. There was not a single innovative idea in the film.
The director was not the hero of this film, he is the one who has totally done injustice to the 'hate story' tag.
The exceptional box office performance of the film (23-26 Crores in just 3 days) can only be because of the negative reviews Tamasha got from both the critics and audiences .
Sharman Joshi and Karan Singh have given average performances. Both were given ample screen space but they are just ordinary in the film.
Zarine Khan has lost weight and looked better than her earlier films. Though she needs to improve a lot on her acting skills. It was hard to guess whether she was smiling or crying or aroused in many scenes.
It's no secret that Daisy Shah was brought aboard the project through Salman Khan's insistence. She had to do her share of skin show and scenes. Salman Khan too must have thought after watching the film that if she had done all this in their film Jai Ho (2014) even that film would have done well at the Box Office.

The only saving grace of the film is it's music. Amaal Malik and  Armaan Malik can really make it big if they continue with their hard work.

In a line despite the Hate Story tag the film is not about hate, it's only about making love whether or not the script demands it.
Do you actually want to pay money to watch 'erotica' ?
