Review of Shirin Farhad Ki Nikal Padi

Release Date - 24'th August 2012

One line which describes the film – Size does not matter !

Best Dialogue –  Pyaar ki koyi expiry date nahi hoti .

Genre- Romance / Comedy

Director-  Bela Bhansali Sehgal

Producer –  Sanjay Leela Bhansali , Sunil A Lulla

Music Director - Jeet Ganguly

Budget –

Rating - 3.5 star for Boman's acting , 1star for Farha's over-acting

Boman Irani as the 45-year-old golden-hearted Parsi bachelor Farhad, a lingerie salesman, who has never found love is the USP of this film . The only women in his life are his dominating mother and doting grandmother, played perfectly by veteran actors Daisy Irani and Shammi. The world has given up on him but Farhad has never given up hope. One day Shirin who claims to be a 38 D but according to Farhad is a 36 B, walks into his shop and its love at first sight.

Though there are some sweet moments in the first half of the film, the second half about the hero trying to fight  family pressures to win the heroine is very unrealistic and boring. The film reminds us of of the bygone era when things were simpler.
Farha's stint as the Indian Idol judge, 2004 must have helped her while playing this role as most of the times she is shouting at the hero or other people.
The songs are nice  but overall they hinder the narrative and don’t really take the story forward in any way.
Bela Sehgal ,known as the editor of brother SLB’s films has made her directorial debut with this film. Despite a good story, Boman's good performance ,decent reviews from the critics and massive promotional drive by celebrities such as SRK this unconventional love story fails to attract masses to the theater because of its slow speed and lack of masala.

In a  line only  if you are a big Boman fan this film is for you .  Others can wait to watch it on TV.

Shammi Kapoor - Rockstar in Shadows

During an Indian Idol show which was a tribute to Late Rajesh Khanna, actor Jeetendra said “Superstars die twice. First when they lose their superstar status and are lost in oblivion and then when God decides to end their sufferings.”
His this comment took me into flashback to a time when I was a big Shammi Kapoor fan.
My feelings for him were  always mixed ,thanks to Doordarshan which on one hand showed him as a young flamboyant heart throb and on the other hand showed him as a bearded father of the groom who tells the bride's father “ baaratiyon ka swagat Pan Parag se ho”

Still when I think of him, the picture which comes in my mind is of a guy playing passionately on the piano “Dil ke jharoke main tujhko baitha kar, yaadon ko teri main dulhan bana kar, rakhoonga main dil ke paas ,mat ho meri jaan udaas.” While other heroes of that time were more reserved and gentlemanly in their manner, he wooed the girl with boisterous sensuality accompanied by a brash, cocky swagger and an energetic eagerness to rebuke convention.

It  was a general expectation that there  would be no obstacles in the way of Shammi Kapoor’s success as he was the son of legendary  actor Prithvi Raj and brother of  Raj Kapoor another super star. But the gawky young Shammi who sported a pencil-thin moustache and greasy, slicked back hair, soon found himself amidst a heap of flops. He had fifteen films as flops to his credit till 1957.

It was  'Tum Sa Nahin Dekha' which totally changed his image. Filmstan announced 'Tum Sa Nahin Dekha' where the evergreen Dev Anand was supposed to play the hero but Dev refused to do the film when he found that a newcomer Ameeta was the heroine. When Shammi was offered the film, taking a cue from his Hollywood screen idols, James Dean and Elvis Presley, Shammi decided to reinvent himself in the 'rebel star' mould .He shaved off his moustache and brought a flamboyant mannerism which was never seen in Indian cinema.  His new haircut and clean-shaven face suddenly focused attention on his mesmerising eyes, which  become his trademark as he melted his heroines with a mere glance. The dynamism in his dancing and acting gave birth to a new Shammi, The Rockstar .

After the success of Tumsa Nahin Dekha, he had no job for six months because he had promised himself that he wouldn't  sign a film for less than a lakh of rupees. He also wanted to have his kind of music and role. In that time he took his jeep and went for shikars to Bhopal ( http://www.junglee.org.in/shikar.html )  .
Shammi  Kapoor films were hero centric and youth oriented. He cashed in on the public adulation showered on the brash, brattish lover by working out extensions of the same in many of his subsequent films. Big-time stardom came Shammi's way with  Dil Deke Dekho (1959) and Junglee (1961). With Junglee, Shammi gifted the Hindi film screen dictionary a new word ,Yahoo!

Talking of Junglee, in a BBC Asian Network interview Shammi said: “It was a great moment in my life, it was practically the first movie in colour that we did.” The term ‘yahoo’ was strongly associated with Shammi Kapoor and it wasn’t Junglee where he used it first.
He said, I did the ‘yahoo’ in Tumsa Nahin Dekha before the Bhangra song Sir Peh Topi Lal, then I did ‘yahoo’ again in Dil Deke Dekho in the song Yaar Tau Chulbula Hai and eventually I turned it into a song in Junglee.”
As for what ‘yahoo’ meant, Shammi said: “It was an expression, I felt very exuberant the whole thing about the boy having achieved his goal, he gets the girl and he goes yahoo!”
Through the sixties, Shammi gave many hits like  College Girl, Basant, Singapore, Boy Friend, Professor, Dil Tera Diwana, China Town, Kashmir Ki Kali, Bluff Master, Janwar and Rajkumar.   He jolted the critics with his charged performance of a murder suspect wanting to exonerate himself in the racy thriller, Teesri Manzil (1966). His turn as the sensitive bachelor who provides home and love to orphans in Bramhachari (1968) won him the Filmfare award for the Best Actor. He made a unique place for himself in the industry as he was the only dancing hero in Hindi films from the late fifties till early seventies.
He did his own choreography and steps and usually they were on the spot. No one has ever been able to replicate such exquisite and unique dancing in Bollywood .  Saira Banu said in an interview "At the time when Dilip sahab, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand ruled the industry, it was Shammi Kapoor who created a niche for himself with his unique dance moves. He used to say he didn't know how to dance but he would just listen to the music and feel it. He used to compose dancing steps by himself in the songs picturised on him and never needed a choreographer. This earned him the name of Elvis Presley of India.

Besides Shammi's exuberance and dancing ability a large part of his appeal was also due to the extremely hummable and catchy songs picturised on him. Songs like Suku Suku, Ae Gulbadan, Deewana Hua Badal, Tumne Pukara Aur Hum Chale Aaye, Tumse Achha Kaun Hai, O Mere Sona Re, Akele Akele Kahaan Jaa Rahe Ho, Raat ke hamsafar, Aajkal Tere Mere Pyaar ke Charche, Badan pe Sitare and Hain Na Bolo Bolo are remebered and hummed even today
Increasing age, burgeoning weight and the Rajesh Khanna wave that swept the nation in 1969 saw Shammi Kapoor bow out as a leading man. His last hit film, in which he played the lead role, was Andaz (1971). As the widower who falls in love with a widow (Hema) it was one of his best performances but unfortunatehly , he had to share the limelight with Rajesh Khanna who thundered with Zindagi ek safar in a special appearance.
As his career as hero ended, Shammi started playing bearded heavy weight character roles and wearing towards spiritualism besides directing films like Manoranjan (1974) and Bandalbaaz (1976). He played Saira Banu's father in Zameer (1974), when he had been her leading man a decade earlier in Junglee (1961) and Bluff Master (1964).  In 1982 he won  Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor  for  Vidhaata . For a short period of time he produced his own Video Entertainment Magazine called "Shammi Kapoor presents Manoranjan". In 1995 he got the Filmfare Lifetime Acheivement Award.

Shammi was an avid writer and shared his innermost thoughts with the readers of magazines like Filmfare.
He had written in a piece (Filmfare January 3, 1958) that his was a "one man rebellion, trying to break the old and make the new. A rebel who wanted to find himself, his real self, not a reflection of the personalities of other people." And later, after giving it a thought, “I am a born Bohemian, unconventional in everything… I hate rigid, iron-clad rules and regulations. I want to be free. Perhaps that’s why I seem unusual to others. I rebel against conventions. Anything that smacks of formality, anything that is pedestrian is anathema to me.”

He was crazy about cars and loved long drives. So much so that he didn’t give up driving even with age catching up with him. He would get his cars custom made to give them a touch of his style and persona. ( http://www.junglee.org.in/firstcar.html )

He lived his life to the fullest. Be it the latest gadgets or fashion fads or then the popular lingo, Shammi was always at it. He loved to interact with the young and keep himself abreast about everything hot, hip and happening. Shammi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan were great friends. Shammi Kapoor composed the antara of 'Neela Aasama So Gaya' from Silisila along with Amitabh Bachchan. They made the tune together. While Shammi Kapoor hummed, Bachchan stringed his guitar .

Shammi Kapoor was also one of the foremost internet users in IndiaHe bought his first computer in London, just to get rid of transit boredom and fell in love with computing. He was the founder and chairman of Internet Users Community of India (IUCI) and has been instrumental in setting up internet organizations like the Ethical Hackers Association.

In an interview Shammi recalls that “when Yahoo opened its office in Mumbai several years ago he was invited by Jerry Yang. As the launch festivities started building towards a climax, Kapoor was pleasantly surprised to hear the band playing his Yahoo song from the film Junglee . Later, Yang told him how inspired he was by the Yahoo song and the way the actor had used the word in his inimitable style in so many of his films.
"It was all very flattering. Many of my relatives still call up and ask whether I own Yahoo,"

He also maintained a website dedicated to the ‘Kapoor family’ http://junglee.org.in and was also active on social networks. He described himself on Twitter as Renaissance man, retired actor, computer buff.
In an interview Shammi ji said that "The machine (computer) did another good to me,the moment the mouse came in my hand, the cigarette flew away…permanently.

At the age of 78,Shammi Kapoor started  Unplugged  on You tube which was about nostalgia and a walk down memory lane. The legendary actor takes you through the beautiful memories of a super successful career that spanned over five decades and a life lived to the fullest-straight from the heart. He uploaded 108 videos in one year and almost 28 lakh people have viewed them till now.

Keeping poor health for quite some time and having to go for dialysis regularly, he passed away on August 14, 2011. However, he will always be remembered as Bollywood's first and last Rockstar .
Even today, video and DVD libraries vouch for the fact that Shammi Kapoor's movies are rented out the maximum and in a poll conducted by a Film Magazine a few years ago, he was named the best ever dancing hero that Hindi Films has seen!

And the memories of the legend will be refreshed every time one  sings the song "Tum mujhe yun bhula na paaoge, jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere, sang sang tum bhi gungunaoge"

Ek Tha Tiger - Love Beyond Borders

One line which describes the film – Jab pyar kiya to darna kya !

Best Dialogue –  Jis mohabbat main deewangi nahi, wo mohabbat hi nahi.

Genre- Romance / Action

Director-  Kabir Khan

Story – Aditya Chopra

Producer –  Aditya Chopra

Music Director -  Sohail Sen , Sajid-Wajid  (Mashallah )

Budget –  75 crores

Rating - 1.5 star for first half, 3.5 star for second half

We all were super excited for this Salman Khan starrer where he plays the role of a RAW agent who travels to exotic locations like Havana ,Ireland, Istanbul .The film started with shaky camera ,flying cigarette butts and currency notes which according to me was not the perfect entry for Salman.
The film dragged for another half an hour and many scenes reminded us of the fiasco called Agent Vinod .I was thinking that Wanted  had better dialogues, Dabangg had better music, Ready had better comic moments and Bodyguard  had a better looking and fitter Salman so what was there in this film which  will make it the top grossing film of the year.

Post interval I got the answer to my question. The USP of the film is not it's action scenes or exotic locations. It's the chemistry between Salman and Katrina. Tiger feels such great love for Zoya which we keep reading in books. He is ready to lose his everything ,even bet his own life for his lady love. Even the cynics will feel something when Salman says , "Jab pyar ho raha tha tab kisine bataya nahi ki dushman hai, aur ab pyar ho gaya hai to koyi bata nahi raha ki dushman kyon hai  ?"

Salman has done everything which his fans expect ,danced ,done some bone breaking action scenes and taken off his shirt too ! There is no one liner in the film like  mujhpar ek ehsaaan karna /  ek baar  main commitment kar deta hoon, which stay in everyone's memory even after the film is long forgotten .

Katrina has done a  good job. Most of the times she just had to look pretty but she has done some action sequences too.

Girish Karnad and Ranbeer Shorey did justice to their small roles.

One thing which I missed while watching the film was the audience's applause and whistles which is a common feature in every Salman film . There was just one scene near the climax where everyone clapped which you will know when you watch it.

In a line it's better to watch the film as soon as possible and get over the tiger obsession .
Good timepass and post interval paisa-vasool. Can be seen in theater with family.

Gangs Of Wasseypur- 2 DoubleTrouble

Words which describe the film – Guns & Abuses

Best Dialogue –
Ramadhir Singh- “Maine Faizal ke dada ko mara, baap ko mara , bhai ko mara ,phir bhi main zinda hoon ,Kyon? Kyonki main CINEMA nahi dekhta

Genre- Crime / Action

Director-  Anurag Kashyap

Writer – Zeishan Quadri

Producer – Anurag Kashyap Viacom 18 Motion Pictures

Music Director -  Sneha Khanwalkar

Budget – 20crores (approximately,including marketing)

The film starts with the funeral of Sardar Khan and the orchestra singer singing "Yaad teri aayegi, mujhko bada sataegi" .Though we missed  Manoj Bajpai  's powerful acting in the 2'nd part Nawazuddin Siddiqui has given an equally powerful performance showing a range of expressions.

Following Sardar’s demise and a series of unfortunate events , Faizal,  charasi , who doesn't care for ruling Wasseypur or taking revenge is jolted out of his stoned apathy by his scornful mother who wants his son to avenge the death of her husband and son .

Faizal's character has a number of shades which were missing in Sardar Khan's character. He is ruthless and can even shoot one of his gang members just to prove a point. But on the other side he loves his wife and is loyal to her. He seeks her support when he is feeling low in jail and asks her to sing the song "Moora" which inspires him to be strong.

Jo bhi wrongwa hai usey,
Set right-wa karo ji,Naahin loojiye ji hope,Thoda fightwa karo ji...

When he breaks his leg he tries to keep himself from crying by putting his hand over his mouth which shows that despite his cruel image he is not immune to pain.We can feel his rage when Sultan shoots his mother .
In the end he confesses to his wife that he never wanted to inherit his father's legacy of revenge .We felt sad for him when he says "Baba ke paas mauka tha  wasseypur wapas na ane ka par wo aye aur sab phanste chale gaye "

This film shows the impact of bollywood on the life of the main characters .
Ramadhir Singh says - "Jab tak Hindustan mein cinema bante rahenge, public bewkoof banti rahegi ,sabke dilmag main apni kahani chal rahi hai aur sab apni kahani ke hero hai "

Faizal's illegitimate brother Definite, played by the film's writer Zeishan Quadri  is a fatally fearless opportunist and a Salman Khan  fan who believes  this epic Maine Pyar Kiya  dialogue "ek ladka aur ek ladki kabhi dost nahi ho sakte"

There were  some failed attempts at comedy  when Definite bursts into Samshad Alam's home to shoot him but his gun fails to load or when Definite and another goon are following  Sultan and reporting about his every move with dialogues like , ‘Kela khareed raha hai. Pet kharab hai shayad?”
Faizal and Mohsina 's love story also contributed to some lighter moments in the film . They share a love which most of the time they express without saying anything to each other. When Faizal is released from jail Mohsina is there waiting for him with their Aviators  reminding us of the first part of the film when their love story started.

Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia ) is a pale shadow of his character in the first part when he tries to make peace with Faizal and says "Main tumhare abba aur bhai ko maarna nahi chahta tha , par main unhe na marta to wo mujhe maar dete " .

The film mainly revolves around Faizal ,Ramadhir Singh ,Sultan and Definite. Other characters like Perpendicular ,Tangent don't play any role in the main story though their stories do add some confusion and lengthens the film. Faizal's character along with taking revenge keeps getting involved in many other activities like iron trading, auctions, politics which also has no relation with the film's main revenge story. If first part had people taking out their swords to kill each other this part has everyone having  guns which they use without any second thoughts. Everyone is out to beat the other either by fair or fowl means. There are no family values with a brother shooting his own sister in the forehead or a mother inspiring his own son to go against his step-brother.

In a line after watching the film I felt like Gandhiji's follower who after being slapped with endless violence and abuses in the first part offers the other cheek for more .

The full 5 hr 30 min film has some 30 minutes of good scenes for which it is not advisable to watch it in theater.

Jism 2 - Much Ado About Nothing !!

One word which describes the film – Misleading

Best Dialogue   – “Zindagi tujhe toh sirf khwaab mein dekha hai maine.”

Genre- Erotic Thriller

Director-  Pooja Bhatt

Writer - Mahesh Bhatt

Producer – Dino Morea , Pooja Bhatt

Music Director - Arko Pravo Mukherjee [1]Mithoon

Budget – 15 crores (approximately)

Pooja Bhatt said in an interview that she hopes 'Jism 2' would be lucky for her the way " Arth "was for her father Mahesh Bhatt. If only she had thought twice before comparing her film with Mr Bhatt's classic. If we compare Jism 2  with Paap , Pooja Bhatt's first film as director she  has worsened with time. Paap (2003) had good music, beautiful scenic locations along with a strong story and screenplay.

Sunny Leone was marketed as the ace of spades of Jism2. Sadly, she is the one who brought the full house down by giving just one expression throughout the film and that involved deep breathing and heaving to accentuate her ample bosoms .

It was like Pooja Bhatt had taught her that 'To be a good actress you must master these three expression -
Deep Breathing (when in anger)
Deep Breathing (when scared )
Deep Breathing (when excited )
Firstly she couldn't act, secondly she was made to say heavy dialogues with an expressionless face like -“Usne mujhe chooa, toh aisa laga ki jannat ne choo liya. Aur phir woh chala gaya apni khusboo chodke, mere tan pe, mere kapdo pe.”

The tough-officer-in-love role did not suit Arunoday Singh and he ends up with unintentionally funny expressions on his face in the emotional scenes.

Randeep Hooda  as Kabir is the only saving grace of the film. His dialogue delivery was powerful and at times reminded us of Naseeruddin Shah. In an interview he said that after the script was narrated to him he told  Pooja Bhatt that he wanted  become an iconic sex symbol with this film.Guess this must have shifted some of Pooja's focus as Hooda's shirtless look is creating more news than sunny's bare back.

Seasoned actor Arif Zakariya was totally wasted in the role of  Arunoday's senior. We actually laughed when he was saying poor dialouges like - "Us jaanwar ko apne dil main pala hai isne " .

Mahesh Bhatt did create a lot of buzz for the film by announcing Sunny as the lead heroine for Jism2  on National TV and it was our trust in his style of films that took us to the theatres . If only he had written a better story and screenplay to hold the attention of the audiences. There was no story on how Izna became a porn star or why she chooses to sleep with a guy whom she meets in a party. After all she was a girl who worked in Adult films, not a prostitute.
How we wish Mr Bhatt had just made a Hollywood inspired film with Emraan Hashmi ,instead of inflicting Sunny Leone on us.
The weakest point of the film was that it had just 5 actors and the coup de grĂ¢ce was that all of them died one after another and that too without any strong reason or justification.

The film started with some scenes showing Sunny in skimpy outfits ,short dresses and high heels. The much talked about steamy scenes and kisses were all in the Maula and Abhi Abhi songs which were already being shown on TV . And to watch these 15 minutes of already seen pleasures we had to bear a 2 hour slow and boring story . Pooja Bhatt's claim that Jism 2 will be the most sensual films of our times that targets the mature audiences was a big marketing gimmick just to attract the audience to the theatres.
I fail to  understand who was the target audience for Jism 2 as it had nothing for the masses who whistled at every scene of " The Dirty Picture "  but were silent during most of Jism2  . It even failed to impress the classes because of its weak story and poor acting by the lead actors.

In one line if Jism 2 is an Erotic Thriller ,then  Ra1 was the best superhero film and Rascals the Best comedy.  A better way to enjoy Jism 2 would be to play the song Maula and Abhi Abhi on repeat and watch Sunny Leone's earlier works. Highly Avoidable.
