Over the years we have seen many films based on friendship . The last , Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara  was about three friends, Arjun, Imraan and Kabir, who have been inseparable since their childhood. They set off to Spain on a bachelor trip and face their fears.

Change the urban ,rich background to rural ,middle class  and we have Kai Po Che ,a  story of three friends where one is an Ex district player who was a victim of politics in the cricketing space, the other one is the nephew of a hindu politician who funds their business and third one is cautious 'baniya'  who wants to make it big in life and is the mastermind behind starting a sports shop and also a sports academy .

The film is based between 2000 and 2002, real life incidents like the devastating earthquake and the horrendous post-Godhra riots are a part of the film . But the director has steered clear of focusing too much on the controversial parts and the main focus is on how the bonds of friendship are tested in difficult times .

Rajkumar Yadav ,earlier seen in small roles in  Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 2 , Talaash etc leaves a lasting impact in the character of  Govind who is practical yet readily gives in to his friends' wishes .

Sushant Singh as Ishaan who is  obsessed with grooming a young Muslim kid with immense batting potential has given an award winning performance . He has wonderful screen presence and in the shirtless scenes he easily gives competition to Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan !

Amit Sadh has given some forgettable performances in the past but he is perfect as  Omi, a guy who has no great ambitions in life and is happy to just be with his friends  .

Kai Po Che is a Gujarati phrase that means "I have cut the kite" which refers to a kite competition where one of the competitors uses his kite to cut off another competitors kite and yells "Kai Po Che!"

In the film they have a one minute scene where all friends are flying kites but I still wonder why they chose it as the film's title . In Chetan Bhagat's  novel 'The 3 mistakes of my life '  Govind is the narrator and the central character of the novel, and the story revolves around the three biggest mistakes of his life . As the film is a complete copy of the novel the original title would have suited it better.

In a line if you are a cricket fan and haven't read  ' The 3 Mistakes of my life ' you will love the film ,others can watch it for some heart touching emotions exchanged between the three friends .

Must watch for excellent performances by the lead actors .

Rank-  3   (Out of the 14 films I have seen in 2013 )

  1. This was one movie i was waiting to see, since the promos came on air as it had the feel good cinema, superb songs, can go on and on listening to Manjha & ShubhArambh , the most fascinating songs ever heard by me in recent times and superb music

Sushant was the main stay of the film, his rebel nature against his dad, his facial reaction to his father's taunts and his desire to do something great in life and ready to take the risk and to see his dreams & his talents in that small boy, was superb & smooth narration

Amit comes alive in his character after the Riots and his facial expression and pain can be felt, his best scene without a dialogue is when he faces Sushant sister at the stadium, looking into her eyes, with his guilt, the way he cries, is Oscar / Kodak Moment for me in the picture

Raj Kumar Yadav brings laughs to everyone's face with his virgin moves with the girl, his over cautious approach in life and his best scene was his anger burst when money goes missing from shop and his facial reaction on earthquake, super epic

Each and every actor has been given equal footage, superb Bro Love show and that's what count, good friends in life is a must. as we are forced upon ourselves with relatives, wife, husband, parents BUT BUT its the friend we choose , so choose wisely and who remain with you for life in ups and downs

Hats off to the director to stay away from political issues, though i was surprised by the strong anti religion words used at start of riots as was very sensitive and hurtful to a religion but then censor has cleared it, so its all good then

This is one of the finest movies i have seen in 2013, i would rate this as my # 1 movie of 2013 and then close # 2 is Special 26, so back to back two good fantastic movies is win win situation and i will see this movie again next week as my desperate urge to see this movie, i booked the first row and now i have a sprained neck as looked up through the movie

The efforts to show 10 years back situation is also worth a mention, using old mobiles, black & white mobiles, and MESSAGE SENT remark on screen, shows efforts to show that phase, that period technology

One can relate to the movie as all the three hero are new , no set image, so they got into the real people character, also rest characters like Mama , Priest , the small boy , the heroine, all were new and so you believe what is going on with them

The pace was slow a bit, but that's okay, as it was gradually building up into a great movie and salute to Abhishek Kapoor to come in with a 2nd winner after rock on, which again was bonding of three friends movie

Sad that Farhan Akhtar could not see a winner in the movie as he refused to back it and instead made a dud like Talaash

I clapped when the movie got over and 2-3 more people then joined in, it was the most awesome movie i have seen in recent times and thus i shall see this again and enjoy it again and again

10 stars out of 5 for this movie, #Salute

  2. One more thought....movie name suits the picture as its Kai Po Che which means dreams cut short......like the earthquake or the riots or the climax.....all was dreams cut short by x y z reason so it is a very apt title

  3. Kai Po Che, another gem from the Director Abhishek Kapoor of the Rock-on fame. His treatment to the sensitive subject like Godhra violence is beautifully intertwined with India's favorite pastime , cricket, and thus aptly handled. The film does not lose sight of the most emotion, that is of friendship.

Above all....Chetan Bhagat for writing such a Brilliant Novel without which this movie would not be there...thanks to CB :))

Go watch it with your friends and scream Kai Po che.

  4. I would like to differ here....the acting by all three main characters is mind blowing...but I did not like the movie...i found it ok...and the first half a tad boring....but I would like to repeat...the performances by all three lead characters is what is worth seeing...
